Primary School Mathematics

Lower Classes (1 to 4)

The essential goals of the Primary Mathematics program includes building children’s number sense, expanding their understanding of place value and operations, as well as developing computational fluency for accurate, efficient and flexible problem solving. Our Mathematics curriculum draws from a variety of best practices to teach right to children’s needs.  For example, manipulatives like base ten blocks are used to help students understand the relationships between numbers, but children are also given practice to reinforce speed and accuracy with their number facts.  Students explore concepts, share strategies, and apply their skills to solve real-life problems. Teachers take the time to make sure concepts are grasped and add extension activities when they see the opportunity. Algorithms are taught as reinforcement to understanding concepts and students master their use at appropriate age levels. This approach enables children to be confident enough to experiment and play with numbers, while having the tools they need to find accurate solutions to problems.

Upper Classes (5 & 6)

Students proceed through the study of arithmetic, pre-algebra, and algebra topics depending on their class. The mathematics program is approached with a spiral learning method: teaching is seen as a continual process of diagnosis and instruction. In addition to the teaching of concepts and skills, emphasis is placed on developing problem-solving abilities and creating an awareness of the applications of mathematics in everyday life. Students are encouraged to seek a variety of strategies in approaching the solution of problems.

At this level of instruction, the central goal is for students to understand the basic arithmetic concepts and master all whole number operations necessary for higher mathematics. The year focuses particularly on mastering the relationships among fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Students are introduced to a variety of other topics, including geometry, statistics, ratio and proportion, integers, and other bases. Ability grouping begins in class 5, and the study of pre-algebra begins in the advanced class 6.
